Course Synopsis: The object of a competent criminal defense investigation is not to simply find and interview some witnesses. The purpose is to help the attorney in the representation of a client who has been accused of a crime. Persons arrested by the police should never be presumed guilty, and despite our best intentions, it is our tendency as members of the society is to presume the police wouldn't have arrested them if they weren't guilty. This course will provide the student with the legal reasoning behind a criminal defense investigation, from the reporting of the crime to its investigation by the police, from the accumulation of evidence to the arrest of the suspect. We'll provide the student with the tools necessary to review evidence gathered by the police, to review police procedure to determine whether it followed standard procedure, whether the constitutional rights of the accused were protected. This course will give students the skills necessary to undertake a criminal defense investigation.
